On Friday, June 16, 2017 volunteers from Thermo-Fisher Scientific came and built twelve learning stations in the courtyard. The stations are accessed through a QR code linked to this website that provides information on different plants and animals that are in the garden. They also have fun activities that students can do to help them learn about nature. The volunteers also planted four new fruit trees- two allow and two pear trees! In a few years the trees will fruit and will allow students to observe and explore the process of pollination. We are so grateful to the volunteers and Thermo-Fisher Scientific for their support and funding for our courtyard gardens.
The raised beds that Thermo-Fisher has installed over the past two years are full of fruits, vegetables and flowers thanks to the Kaegebein Garden Club and Mrs. MsDonald's fourth grade class. Students have been picking strawberries and experiencing how good they can taste when grown organically and picked from the vine. There is also lettuce and spinach ready to eat and enjoy.
Mrs. Seibert's class grew the next round of swamp milkweed seeds for the monarchs this spring and they have been planted alongside last years plants which are now two to three feet tall! WE have observed a monarch in the garden and hopefully more will come so the monarch watch station can become active. We are growing thirteen monarch caterpillars which, when they become butterflies, will be released into the pollinator garden.
Kaegebein Elementary School is going to be on the Grand Island Garden walk this year! It will take place on July 9th and will be running from 10-4. We hope that many people in the community will come to see our gardens!
