Honey bees are our most important pollinator, but a very bad disease is happening to these bees. Now, honey bees are in danger. Honey bees live in a house that is called a hive. These bees are responsible for pollinating numerous food plants that make our diets more exciting and nutritious, including many fruits, vegetables, and nuts. In 2006, beekeepers in the United States reported that a mysterious disease, called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) was causing bees to die. Scientists believe that Colony Collapse Disorder is caused by both a parasite and a virus. The bees are dying because the virus causes them to get lost, preventing them from finding their hive. Another reason why honey bees are dying is from garden chemicals. When the bees land on a flower full of chemicals, they can get sick. One more reason why honey bees are dying is due to climate changes. If the weather is too hot or too cold the bees might not be able to live, causing bee populations to shrink. Honey bees are our most important pollinator, but sadly, honey bees are disappearing.
