FRUITS
There are many kind of fruits to eat. There are strawberries in one of the raised beds in our garden and we have planted two apple trees and two pear trees. Fruits and seeds help plants reproduce. A fruit grows from a part of the plant near the base of the flower. Inside of a fruit are seeds, and each fruit holds one or more seeds. Peaches, pears, and nuts are fruits you can eat. Some fruits are inedible, which means they are unfit to be eaten.
Can you see an apple or a pear forming on our trees?
Vegetables
There are also many different types of yummy vegetables! Our students have planted many varieties of vegetables in the raised beds. A vegetable is technically the root, stem or leaf of a plant which we can eat. An example of an edible root is a carrot, beet or turnip. We can eat stems like celery or asparagus. Examples of delicious leaves include lettuce, spinach and arugula. Sometimes it can be confusing to determine if what you are eating is a fruit or a vegetable. Watch the video below to learn more!
