Producers
Plants are producers. They use energy from sunlight to produce or make their own food. With the help of water, they convert that energy into usable energy in the form of sugar, or food. This process is called photosynthesis.

Are producers important in the food chain?
Yes!! Producers are eaten by herbivores, or plant eaters like deer, rabbits, and mice which in turn, are eaten by carnivores, or meat eaters.
Can you find some producers in the garden?
Decomposers
Who eats the garbage in nature? Well, decomposers do.
What is a decomposer? Decomposers include insects, worms, bacteria, and fungi.
Decomposers feed on wastes from other organisms. They also eat the remains of dead plants and animals. They play a very important role in a community. As they feed on dead matter, they break it down into simple chemicals. These chemicals are returned to the soil or the water. The chemicals become available as food and nutrients to help plants grow and reproduce.
Can you find any decomposers? Take a walk through our gardens and try to find things like insects, worms, and fungi!
